Nkinzi
When director Rehema Nanfuka approached Mulika Studios for Nkinzi, she brought a distinct and daring sonic vision: a film anchored not just in reality, but in a lush, fantasy-driven orchestral score. Over an intense one-month production period, Joses Arins Emanzi spearheaded the complete audio post-production pipeline—crafting an immersive, psychological soundscape, composing a deeply emotional original score, and executing extensive audio restoration. Despite tight deadlines and late picture cuts, our collaborative studio environment allowed us to capture the exact emotional heartbeat of the film. Nkinzi went on to become a critically acclaimed success, winning Best Feature Film and Best Picture, while securing a nomination for Best Sound.

The Case Study
The Creative Challenge: Composing Fantasy in the Capital Rehema’s vision demanded an orchestral, fantasy-driven score that was entirely unique to the contemporary Ugandan cinematic landscape. To achieve this, Joses Arins Emanzi sketched out intricate orchestral mockups within Cubase, working side-by-side with the director in the studio to map the film’s complex emotional themes: childhood innocence, familial love, conflict, and the psychological weight of inadequacy. However, the creative process had to run parallel to massive technical hurdles. Late picture changes forced the team to constantly conform the audio project to new video cuts under a brutally tight timeline. Simultaneously, the production audio arrived with severe technical flaws; the field recordings had been captured with a poorly set limiter, resulting in heavy background noise and digital clipping. The Mulika Approach & Solution Instead of standard dialogue editing, the first week was entirely dedicated to aggressive, precision audio restoration to save the performances. To build the sonic world surrounding the dialogue, we utilized our extensive, custom-recorded field library of authentic Kampala soundscapes—capturing the grit of downtown taxi parks, suburban street vendors, and the ubiquitous roar of boda-bodas. This hyper-local audio DNA not only grounded the film’s realism but is part of the foundational library we share globally via our Mulika Audio Safari platform. The ultimate test came with the film's premiere. Rather than a calibrated cinema, the film debuted in a massive hall using an unpredictable public address (PA) system. Understanding the stakes, Joses embedded himself at the venue the night before, analyzing the room’s acoustics, and rushed back to the studio to patch, adjust, and optimize the stereo mix specifically to fight the PA system's limitations. The Results & Impact Our hands-on, adaptive approach ensured that Nkinzi captivated audiences from its very first unconventional screening, later translating beautifully into a flawless commercial cinema run where the sound design received widespread industry praise. The project was a massive triumph for Mulika Studios, culminating in multiple major award wins and a prestigious Best Sound nomination. Proving the standalone power of the music, Joses also successfully packaged and released the Nkinzi Original Motion Picture Soundtrack as a commercial album on digital streaming platforms.
To deliver a premium end-product, we leveraged our state-of-the-art treated studios and the latest in digital-analog hybrid hardware. Every stage of production, from location tracking to the final audio stems delivery, was run through strict quality checking to ensure broadcast standard output.
